Bela Berking

PhD Student

Institute for Molecules and Materials

Biography

Bela obtained his masters degree in Molecular Biology and Cell Biology in Berlin at the FU. During his studies he specialized in bacterial and virological research, especially in a medical scenario. He conducted his Master Thesis at the Radboud University as a student of Post Doc. Motilal Mathesh and joined September of 2020 as a Ph.D. student. During his time in Berlin Bela worked various teaching jobs at the FU, including three years as teaching assistant for Biochemistry

Projects for students

I focus on using the already existing polymer based systems such as stomatocytes to further modify them biochemically to fit a medical scenario, such as targeting or drug delivery. Below are the projects I am  currently focused on. Students can explore other possibilities to modify and tune stomatocytes and polymersomes to achieve an enhanced function.

  • Active targeting of bacterial biofilms, an enzyme based targeting system with antimicrobial surface modifications
  • Stomatocytes as artificial virus, modification via viral spike proteins as artifical viral vector
